I tried writing to file and it worked with the latest cfclient (2017.05) without any problem.

What does the terminal output say when you activate a "write to file" in the log blocks tab? Mine e.g. says:

INFO:cfclient.utils.logdatawriter:Started logging of block [Battery] to file [/home/anton/.config/cfclient/logdata/20170622T11-19-15/Battery-20170622T11-19-26.csv]
