Hi,
I have setup everything for controlling the quad using kinect. The camera is detecting the red color perfectly but the bot is flying in random directions. Is it necessary to have magnetometer installed on the crazyflie? If not, what else could be the problem?

Maybe the start position of the Crazyflie is incorrect? Since it does not have an absolute yaw position it needs to be facing the right way during takeoff. It should be facing the same way as when you are flying it your self, so the front should be facing away from the camera.
