Let me get this flow right and try it.
Inside the Configure Input screen
- Hit detect for say thrust
- hit PS button on controller
- push right stick all the way to top

I have tried just hitting detect and moving all joysticks and hitting buttons with no luck. I even tried in the standard windows device area and did not get results their either.

Yeah, that sounds like the correct way.

If you in widows go to Control Panel->Game Controllers->Properties for the PS3 controller do you manage to get some output then?

I get no output in windows Game Controller section.
I will try this later this afternoon.

Got it working!
Used Motionjoy but the real issue I found is you have to make sure that the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder needs to be writable. By default its read only which is why you get errors in motionjoy and the drivers were not updating.
