Motors dislocating when crashing the CF

Post by alex »

Good morning dear CF addicts,

when crashing the CF (which turned out to happen very often in the learning phase) the motors are being dislocated inside the motor mounts in the downward direction. Even though the motor mounts have some o-shaped kind of support on the inside, the motors are sliding downwards regularly. So at some point the motor cables are the lowest part of the CF and therefore are already showing some abrasion marks.

What can I do against this? I would like to avoid gluing the motors to the motor mounts. Any ideas?

Hi alex,

You could try something like this to protect the motors and make the landing a bit smoother.

Or if you happen to have access to a 3D printer take a look here. This frame by VGer protects both the motor mounts as well as the propellers, and you can also use it to mount the battery below the PCB. Comes at the price at some weight though (~3g) which makes the Crazyflie handle a bit slower and reduces battery life time a bit (the Nerf dart approach originally posted by mrb0y doesn't seem to have this issue, at least so far I didn't notice anything like that).

I don't have a 3D printer lying around ;), but I'll search for something like the nerf darts. Thanks for the tips.

Can someone please tell me the outside diameter in millimeters of the motor mount? I'm not at home but have possibly found a quick solution for protecting the motors from below.

7.49mm, 7.46 if I give some more pressure on the calipers.

Corrected after properly zero-ing the calipers

Hi Alex, nor do I but I found out this firm in Belgium, I downloaded the file from Thingiverse and I order one copy.
For your info it will cost me 23,47 € including the shipping to France ...
I should receive it within few days !
May be you can find similar services in Germany ?

For our previous prototypes we have used Shapeways, you can get the price by uploading the model there. We have used "Strong and flexible" material before but I'm not sure that it will hold for this frame, the material might be a bit brittle.
