Crazy flie costs $180 but similar small quadricopters with the same performance (but not hackeable) costs about $70. Why it is so espensive?
It is by small series? (So x times bigger production will be cheaper.)
It is because Bitcrase have too big profit?
Of curse if there will be alternative producers it will be cheaper. But they can not because licence denies it.
Why do we need to have it cheaper? We are developers and we does not have problem to buy a toy for this price. But there are also buyers who can not affort it — schools, companies, kids without rich parents or from less developed countries, etc.
Why we should want to spread it? Bigger community often means better product in open source world. Even if companies will want to improve it while using it for their commercial solution, but CC NC licence effectively denies it. More hacking kids from developing countries can increase their education and in a time their country. And even in developed countries it will have good effect on education. See what Arduino have done, image what can do something more sexy — hackeable quadricopter.
There is huge opportunity for this and other drones projects. And many other project are cheaper or has more liberal licence.

One reason for the higher price is the amount of development that has to go into it. Development we share freely with the world. Bitcraze does not make much profit and the profit made has been invested back into development. If you compare to other more research oriented drone platforms they often cost way more then ours, so in that sense I would say it is cheep.
We would however like to have a better priced option and we are working on it. It is targeting the $50-70 price range but will then have a more limited feature set and processing power. Still capable of plenty of hacking though! We don't have a timeline for this yet so can't give any dates or promises.

why don't you supply it just board kits people can add motors themselves, or even a unsoldered board kits people might want to solder them themselves

I would say there are plenty of kits out there which can do this which makes it less interesting for us. If the CF-RZR ever becomes a product it might be what you are looking for
